Day 1

Early arrival at Kigali Airport and transfer to Akagera NP. We hope your flight is scheduled for an early landing in Rwanda (before 4pm). Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your assigned professional English-speaking driver and guide and transferred to your accommodation in/near Akagera National Park. The relatively warm, low-lying Akagera National Park includes savannas, acacia forests, dense forests, wetlands and 12 lakes. The great spotted woodpecker is a true conservation success story. With families of South African lions establishing and breeding successfully and the reintroduction of the eastern black rhinoceros, the park boasts of the Big 5 sightings. You arrive, check into your accommodation and relax. Optional (additional cost): If interested and time permits, you can embark on a spectacular night game drive. Accommodation: Akagera Game Lodge | Meals: Dinner | Driving time: Approximately 3 hours.

Day 2

Morning game drive, afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema. After breakfast, depart for a morning game drive. Keep an eye out for Akagera residents, including: Lions, rhinos, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, impalas, topis (known as tseseve in southern Africa), bushbucks and more. Return to your accommodation for lunch and embark on a boat safari on Lake Ihema in the afternoon. On a boat safari, you'll see hordes of hippos and crocodiles. A boat safari allows you to see more big game, including buffalo and elephants gathering on the shore for a drink. Accommodation: Akagera Game Lodge | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 3

Depart Akagera and drive to your accommodation in Volcanoes NP (nearby). Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation before heading to Volcanoes National Park. Located in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Arrive at your accommodation, check-in and relax before a busy day. Then enjoy dinner and overnight stay. Accommodation: Hotel La Palme | Meals: Breakfast, lunch and dinner | Driving time: Approximately 5-6 hours.

Day 4

Gorilla trekking or Mount Bisoke hike and afternoon community, Cultural experience. This morning, you will have breakfast and move to the Rangers’ Point where you will receive briefing. From the briefing, you will proceed for the gorilla encounter (adventure) in the Volcanoes National Park. Alternative: If not interested in gorilla trekking, you can proceed out to hike Mount Bisoke (3711 metres above sea). The summit will reward you with the sight of a beautiful crater lake. Return to the accommodation for some rest and later you can move out to encounter the local community. Note: Gorilla permits go for USD 1,500 per person and it’s not included in the cost below. Day 5

Golden monkey trekking and afternoon explore Twin Lakes – canoeing. Golden monkeys trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park and at the same time (7:00 am) just like gorilla trekking. These rare monkey species are also listed as endangered and Volcanoes NP currently has two habituated groups that are available for trekking by visitors. The exercise starts with a short briefing from the park ranger at the RDB Office. Thereafter, you will proceed to trek the golden monkeys through the rainforest of the volcanoes NP. Return to the accommodation for some rest and lunch. Later, move out to explore the Twin Lakes – canoeing. Accommodation: La Palme Hotel | Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

Day 6

Exit Volcanoes, return to Kigali Airport to catch flight out. Enjoy a relaxed breakfast at the accommodation. Thereafter, you will check out and embark on a return trip to Kigali Airport to catch your flight out (recommended for 14:00 onwards). Accommodation: Recommended on request | Meals: Breakfast | Drive Time: Approx. 3 hours.
