Day 1

Early arrival at Kigali airport and transfer to Akagera NP.
We hope your flight is scheduled for an early landing (before 4pm). Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be met by your assigned professional English-speaking driver and guide and transferred to your accommodation in/near Akagera National Park. The relatively warm, low-lying Akagera National Park includes savannas, acacia forests, dense forests, wetlands and 12 lakes. Akagera is a true conservation success story in Rwanda. With families of South African lions establishing and breeding successfully and the reintroduction of the eastern black rhinoceros, the park boasts of the Big 5 sightings. You arrive, check into your accommodation and relax. Optional (additional cost): If interested and time permits, you can embark on a spectacular night game drive.

Day 2

Morning game drive, afternoon boat cruise on Lake Ihema.
After breakfast, depart for a morning game drive. Keep an eye out for Akagera residents, including: Lions, rhinos, buffaloes, zebras, giraffes, impalas, topis (known as tseseve in southern Africa), bushbucks and more. Return to your accommodation for lunch and embark on a boat safari on Lake Ihema in the afternoon. On a boat safari, you’ll see hordes of hippos and crocodiles. A boat safari allows you to see larger animals such as buffalo and elephants gathering on the shore to drink.

Day 3

Depart Akagera and drive to your accommodation in Volcanoes NP (nearby).
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast at your accommodation before heading to Volcanoes National Park. Located in northwestern Rwanda, Volcanoes National Park borders Virunga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Mgahinga Gorilla National Park in Uganda. Arrive at your accommodation, check-in and relax before a busy day. Then enjoy dinner and overnight stay.

Day 4

Gorilla trek or Mount Bisok trek and afternoon community and cultural experience.
This morning we will have breakfast and head to Rangers Point for our briefing. After the briefing, proceed to a gorilla encounter (adventure) in Volcanoes National Park. Alternatively: If gorilla trekking isn’t your thing, you can hike to Mount Bisoke (3711 meters above sea level). At the summit, you can see the beautiful crater lake. After returning to your accommodation and resting, head out to meet the local community. Note: Gorilla permits are $1,500 per him and are not included in the cost below.

Day 5

Golden monkey trekking and afternoon explore Twin Lakes – canoeing.
Golden monkeys trekking takes place in Volcanoes National Park and at the same time (7:00 am) just like gorilla trekking. These rare monkey species are also listed as endangered and Volcanoes NP currently has two habituated groups that are available for trekking by visitors. The exercise starts with a short briefing from the park ranger at the RDB Office. Thereafter, you will proceed to trek the golden monkeys through the rainforest of the volcanoes NP. Return to the accommodation for some rest and lunch. Later, move out to explore the Twin Lakes – canoeing.

Day 6

Leave the volcano and head to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Enjoy a leisurely breakfast before embarking on the journey to Nyungwe Forest National Park. Filled with breathtaking beauty in southwestern Rwanda, Nyungwe is a must-see on a Rwandan safari that offers an unforgettable wildlife experience. A visit to Nyungwe passes through a large natural forest of ancient trees that have supported the colonization of many primates, including chimpanzees, black and white colobus monkeys, and more. The drive is a bit longer, but incredibly scenic, passing through villages and lush landscapes. Never get bored.

Day 7

Chimpanzee trek and canopy walk in the afternoon.
Home to Rwanda’s largest chimpanzee population (approximately 400), chimpanzee trekking is an important activity in Nyungwehi Forest National Park. Have breakfast and drive to the trekking point. There you will be instructed on what to do first.

Day 8

Hike the Izumo Falls Trail, followed by a tea tour.
Enjoy breakfast and explore the Izumo Falls hiking trails. The trail is 10.6 km long and takes about 4 hours to hike. En route to the falls, you’ll encounter ferns along the trail and various bird species such as Rwenzori tulaco and monkeys in the wooded areas along the trail. From there, return to your accommodation and rest. Afterwards, explore the nearby tea plantations and return to your accommodation for dinner and overnight.

Day 9

Depart Nyungwe and return to Kigali Airport for your flight.
Enjoy a leisurely breakfast in the hotel. Then, check out and head back to Kigali Airport to catch your flight (4 PM is recommended).
